As far as making cat toys go, I can’t think of a way that this cat toy could be more simple. Surprisingly it’s one of the most effective toys I’ve ever given Train. It’s a ping pong ball that’s stuffed with catnip. Best of all, it doesn’t cost much and can be easily made at home.
The first step is to get a hold of some ping pong balls. Liz (savvycat) and I picked 6 up for $3 at our local big department store. I then used a small craft knife to place an X shaped cut in the end of the ping pong ball. Then I then pushed the dried catnip into the ball. And that’s it. Easy!

Train loves it on our old floorboards, as they produce irregular bounces. Because the floor is also slightly unlevel it makes the ball roll… which of course in Train’s imagination means that it’s running away or trying to attack her.
If you want to try and make your own catnip’d ping pong ball it really is as simple as described above. Just be careful while cutting the X shape, it is very easy to slip and cut yourself. Also, don’t tape over the cut you made, otherwise the delicious catnip smell won’t waft out as your cat bats it around.

Fui and Suey both love ping pong balls. They played soccer with one for what must have been an hour the other night non-stop. I will try catnipping one of them up, and see how they react:)
