Today I went to the first of five feline health seminars that the Cat Protection Society (based in Newtown, Sydney) are holding between now and the 30th of August 2009. They are free and open to the public – but you do have to book your spot in advance, as there is limited capacity.
The topics and dates are:
Sunday 28 June: “No way!” How to pill a cat, clip their nails and do other things they need but hate.
Sunday 12 July: Feline nutrition: maintaining healthy weight, teeth & coat.
Sunday 2 August: Happy and safe inside: creating an enriched environment for the indoor cat.
Sunday 16 August: Is your sofa a scratch pole? Is the kitchen floor a litter tray? What problem behaviours mean and what to do about them.
Sunday 30 August: Itchy & scratchy: keeping parasites away.
I was interested to see how they’d handle today’s topic – I know I’ve never had any luck with giving Train a pill and cutting her nails is an ordeal every single time. With plenty of kitties to demonstrate on, Nerida Atkin led the talk and provided plenty of advice on how to get them done without all the stress.

Her willing demonstrators (Jace, Rosie and newly adopted Molly) enjoyed the spotlight, but perhaps not so much the pill taking and cutting of claws! With gentle coaxing from Nerida it all went to plan, and I think everyone came away from it with something!

Nerida took the time to answer questions, both on the topics covered and on other stressful events for kitties. Then it was time to say hello to the kitties waiting to be adopted. Okay, maybe that’s just what I wanted to do.

Seminars are held in the upstairs cattery at Cat Protection Society of NSW, 103 Enmore Road, Newtown (opposite the Enmore Theatre). All seminars start at 1.30pm and will run for approximately 45 minutes including time for questions.
Numbers are strictly limited, so reserve your place by phoning the Cat Protection Society on 02 9519 7201 between 9am-4pm Monday to Friday.
