Tonight Mr. J and I attended the Kitten-Ka-Boodle photo competition opening night and award presentation at the Buzzzbar Cafe in Newtown. I’ve previously blogged about it a few times, and also entered a few photos myself.

We arrived a little past 6pm and the place was already busy – we were lucky to get one of the last spots on the couch in the corner. We then tag teamed to check out all the fantastic photos and say hello to the Cat Protection staff (and buy a bunch of raffle tickets). The Buzzzbar Cafe staff were very patient, squeezing between the crowds to provide good food and drinks to everyone. I also want to mention the great musician who spent a couple of hours entertaining the crowd. In the midst of the night his name has slipped my mind, but I’ll be sure to update the post when I remember / someone tells me!

The event seemed bigger than last year – if it runs again in 2010 I think they’ll have to move to a bigger venue, especially if the number of entries is anything to go by. They had three folders of photos that didn’t make the finals, and apparently there were more that may appear in the next Cat Affairs magazine.
Kristina Vesk took the floor and thanked the various sponsors involved, and also confirmed how important the donations and help provided by the community is. The Cat Protection Society relies on donations of it’s members and the community to survive. They are a ‘no kill’ cat shelter, and keep many older cats until they can be re homed – which can be years. So this is the bit where I say please, if you can, donate some money to the Cat Protection Society and help them to be able to keep up their wonderful work. Of course, if you’d prefer to donate to your local cat shelter, RSPCA or SPCA, that’s okay too!

Then came the fun bit. And I’m going to have to admit I failed pretty badly at keeping a list of who won. In fact, I can only remember one name, and that was my own as Train’s paws won over the judges enough to give me the Bronze prize! I will be doing my research tomorrow and finding out the names of the other winners, as I loved their entries!

I should also mention that Mr. J managed to win one of the raffle prizes… it was a long and heavy walk home!!

Needless to say we had an excellent night — but that started well before we won anything!
The exhibition runs from 19 May – 8 June 2009 (closed on Mondays), so pop along to have a meal and check out all the fantastic photos on the walls. The Buzzzbar Cafe is located at 349 King Street in Newtown (a short stroll from Newtown Station).

Hello again Liz,
I see the call has gone out for the secret identity of the musician who performed on the opening night.
The wonderful Sascha Klave, formerly of Cat Protection, sometimes plays around town. His myspace page is: http://www.myspace.com/saschaklave
All the best >.<
