Feline Greenies

by savvycat on May 18, 2009

Train is fond of treats. We try not to give her too many — generally only when she’s good. She’ll get some when we’ve successfully clipped her nails (a very stressful event in the savvycat household), given her a bath, or brushed her. Of course, there are the occasions we use them as bribery — to get her to come in off the balcony, for one.

We’ve been using some beefy liver-y type treats of late, until Mr. J bought home a pack of ‘Feline Greenies’. They are a little on the expensive side – AU $10 for 85g of treats – but seeing as they claim to be Australian Made, he couldn’t resist.

Feline Greenies

These little snacks are actually dental treats – meant to be given daily (between 6 and 10 pieces, depending on his/her weight) in order to assist with keeping kitty’s dental hygiene in order. I weighed a treat to determine how many you’d get in a pack (my initial thought was just to count them, and then I realised I’d probably start losing some to Train’s eager tummy) and one treat is less than 1 gram. So, you’d expect at least 85 treats in a pack and if you had a 4.5kg – 7kg kitty, you’d clear yourself of a pack in, oh, about 10 days. Making the $10 price tag really expensive when you consider how often you’d be buying them.

I’ve never seen Train turn down a treat, and these are certainly no exception to the rule. They fill the ‘bribery’ part well, she comes running when she hears them open, or if the bag is shaked, although I suspect that sound is generic among all brands.
She hasn’t been on them long enough for me to notice any difference to her teeth, but we’ll see how that goes.

In regards to the ‘Australian Made’ logo, it seems they are made in Australia and also distributed to New Zealand thanks to Mars Petcare, but the original product idea comes from America. But hey, at least they’re not importing the item.

We sell a ton of them at work (small animal clinic in NZ). Cats love them and we can spoil the kitties :D

My kitten, Toby, goes over the moon for these treats. When I feed him Greenies he licks my finger wet, and pawing at the package for more. I wish the AU site for the company offered free sample like the North American one does. Seems a little unfair to me.

Nadea - have you noticed (or heard of) any kind of dental improvement, as they promise? Or is it more of a tasty thing?

Cindy - I agree about the free samples! The site doesn’t even mention the kitty treats yet though, so fingers crossed they might get around to it. :)

my cat alvin loves these too. he sits on command to get these. I also pop them in a treat ball so he has to do some work to get his treats. he has tried beef, ocan fish, tuna and chicken and he loves them all.
