CatIt Water Fountain: Review.

by savvycat on May 27, 2009

Years ago I saw a photo of a Catit Water Fountain and thought it was AWESOME. I then couldn’t find any stockists in Australia and got bored with the idea. While wandering through my local PetBarn recently I spotted a familiar sight next to the cat food. Yup, Train’s water drinking experience was about to become a little bit more fancy.

The Catit Water Fountain works by recirculating the water which provides fresh tasting, cool water. The cat can drink straight off the fountain, or from the bowl attached.

Train’s a bit weird. She LOVES drinking water straight from our bathroom tap – but only at the most inconvenient times (cat trying to share your water while you’re brushing your teeth, anyone?). I figured that at the very least the running water would keep her entertained for a little while.

At AU $78.50 it’s not the cheapest water dish, but if you’re trying to encourage your kitty to drink more water it may help.

When we set it up and first introduced it to Train she was a little wary. It wasn’t long before she started drinking from the fountain though:

The first night we left it running overnight. Well, we tried to. It made a loud dripping/running water sound that made me paranoid it was overflowing onto the floor. At about 2:00 AM I got out of bed and switched it off at the wall. I was rather disappointed as the pump had been very quiet, it was only the sound of the running water that kept me awake!

3 days later Mr. J decided to give it another chance… and this time it was so quiet. I’m not sure if it just hadn’t settled properly before or what, but the difference in noise was definitely noticeable. I haven’t felt the need to switch it off of a night since. And Train likes it much better when the water is running down the sides of the dome.

I haven’t yet had to replace the filter.. or bothered to find out where I can buy refills, but so far it’s a winner. I’ll be keeping an eye on the running costs (electricity + filters), but it seems to be worth it.

We have one for biro; it’s great. Ours can be noisy if you don’t have it flush on the floor or if it’s on a bow in the floor. Still I think he drinks from this more than from a standard bowl.
