With Easter coming up this weekend and the increase in chocolate around the house, it’s probably a good time to remind everyone that cats and chocolate do not mix.
Why not? Well, chocolate contains xanthines. Xanthines act as diuretics – causing the body to lose fluid and also a cardiac stimulant – causing the heart to race.

What are the symptoms of xanthine poisoning in cats? Well, symptoms vary based on the cat and how much they have ingested, but include:
- Vomiting & diarrhea;
- Hyperactivity;
- Restlessness;
- Frequent urination;
- Muscle tremors;
- Coma; and
- Death.
Remember that cats weigh much less than humans, so it doesn’t take much to affect their system. If you think your kitty has ingested any chocolate – contact your vet immediately. And Google is not a valid alternative to a Vet!
So, keep your chocolate (and the foil and plastic wrappers) away from your kitty this Easter – and all year round.
